It is yet another privilege to bring to you God’s Word today. I believe that as the Word of God comes afresh to you, it will edify, instruct and direct you, in Jesus name!
God will not leave you to handle your emotions on your own, He gave you emotions and made provisions through the Word so that you can learn how to manage them. God’s will is for you to glorify Him. Earlier, we started the series on ‘Managing Your Emotions’. Taking us further, I will be teaching on the second series which I have titled, ‘How to Manage Emotions’.
Among others, there are several ways you can manage your emotions:
Walk with God
God created your emotions and He can guide you through every emotion. Naturally as humans, we tend to act how we feel per time and we want others to perceive how we feel, instead of seeking God and making Him understand how we feel at all times. We have strong feelings of what we want, what we fear, what we treasure, and what we despise. However, it is pertinent to seek God’s help in order to walk you through all these emotions. Remember, when you rely on your own knowledge, you get to make more mistakes. Naturally, emotions can be confusing and hard to handle as man, but with God on your journey, He will enable you to get through it with ease. When you start with God to help you walk through your emotional needs, you begin to feel and act the right way.
Fill Your Mind with The Word
God’s Word soothes every emotion. When you engage in regular search, study and meditation of the Word, it builds a shield on your mind that will wage war against every negative situations or circumstances. The Word of God is the principal raw material for the renewing of the mind. Feed your mind always with the Word, seek to get rid of all ‘junks’, or words that are contrary to what God has said about you and about your emotions. Someone saw my husband and asked him, ‘I have never seen you frown your face, don’t you have problems?’ He replied, ‘maybe they came and I never noticed them’. It can only be a man filled with the Word that can respond in such a manner. Therefore, guard your heart from every negative thing that would rid you of the stable emotions God has designed for you.
Watch and Pray
Jesus instructed that we should watch and pray always, because He knows the enemy will always be at one corner seeking whom to steal from and that will not be you, in Jesus name! However, there is a need for you to pray at all times. Prayers don’t just change situations; prayers also change people. Prayers will always help you to get rid of all negative emotions such as anger, bitterness, strife, envy, jealousy etc. Be mindful and careful to avoid temptations that the enemy may bring in order to tempt you. It is important to note that, your emotions determine how you are viewed, how people relate with you and how you can receive from God. Bad emotions breed bad happenings as seen in Job 3:25 which says, For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me. Instead of reacting negatively to how you feel, turn it into a prayer point to God who is readily waiting to attend to them at all times. Prayers does not just move you towards God but moves God towards you too. Pray and watch always.
Godliness with contentment, the Bible says is ‘a great gain’ (1 Timothy 6:6). You don’t have any reason to compare yourself with another person. My husband often says ‘life is in phases; men are in sizes’. The phase you are in right now is good enough for you today. Handle it well, and you will enjoy a better tomorrow. Lack of contentment can mar your emotions and ultimately your future; beware of it!
Contentment is the ability to be stable and at ease in body and mind in one’s situation. Contentment is developing the ability to enjoy what you have, find happiness and peace in everything, and situations around you without murmuring, complaining, angry, agitated and other negative emotions that come with it. Practice delayed gratification and learn contentment to be able to manage your emotions at all times.
Mind Your Thoughts
Emotions is a result of what you think. If you think happiness, you will look and act happy, but if you think fear, anxiety, anger, you will act and look same. Remember, you are what you think; so, set your mind on what you want to look like. The Bible espoused, For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he (Proverbs 23:7a). Get rid of negative emotions from your thoughts. Create memories such as pictures of good and wonderful things you wish to see around you and think about them whenever you are confronted with a negative situation. When you feel uneasy, angered, perplexed, perturbed, turn all those negative feelings to positive ones. Seek to see the bright side of every contrary situations and circumstances. Resist the urge to magnify them in your thoughts, establish a lasting barricade in your mind and see yourself live about negative emotions.
You can never manage your emotions naturally as a man, you need a supernatural force to intervene and help you manage your emotions. This supernatural force can only overtake your natural mind when you accept Jesus as your Lord and personal Saviour. Therefore, if you have made up your mind to make this decision, say this prayer of faith: Dear Lord Jesus Christ, I come to You today. I am a sinner. Forgive me my sins and cleanse me with Your Blood. I accept You as my Lord and Saviour. Make me a child of God today. Thank You for delivering me from sin, pride, arrogance and self-pity and all the lies of satan to serve the living God and thank You for accepting me into Your Kingdom, in Jesus name! Amen.
